Driving to Jahorina and Bjelašnica

Sarajevo to Snowy Peaks with Trio Rent a Car

How far are the ski resorts from Sarajevo?

Both resorts are close, but the roads climb steeply, so times depend heavily on the weather. In good conditions, roughly:

  • Jahorina: about 30 km from the city centre (45 minutes to an hour), or about 1 hour from the airport.
  • Bjelašnica: about 30 km from the city centre (around 45 minutes), and a little closer to the airport, at roughly 30 to 40 minutes.

After fresh snow, or on busy weekends, these times can easily double. Plan for that.

The routes

Jahorina via Pale

Jahorina lies south-east of Sarajevo. Head east out of the city towards Pale, then follow the signs for Jahorina. The final part is a mountain road with tight bends that climbs to the resort.

Jahorina is in the Republika Srpska entity. There's no border or checkpoint between the two entities, but you'll notice road signs in Cyrillic as well as Latin script.

Bjelašnica and Igman via Hadžići direction

Bjelašnica lies south-west of Sarajevo, on the same side of the city as the airport. Head out through Ilidža in the direction of Hadžići, then turn off and follow the signs up the mountain. Igman, the neighbouring plateau, is on the way and has its own small ski areas and walking trails.

Your phone's map app or our GPS (€2.50 per day) will guide you. In winter, follow the main, ploughed roads even if your navigation suggests a shortcut.

Winter driving: what you need to know

Winter tyres are the law

In Bosnia and Herzegovina, winter equipment is mandatory from 15 November to 15 April. At TRIO, winter tyres cost €13 per rental, not per day. Add them when you book.

Snow chains

On mountain roads you may see signs requiring chains. When they do, you must fit them. It's worth practising once on dry ground before you need to do it in the snow. If you're unsure about chains, ask us when you book.

Fog, ice and short days

  • Fog: Sarajevo sits in a valley and winter fog is common. It often clears higher up, but visibility on the way can be poor. Slow down and keep dipped headlights on, as the law requires all year.
  • Ice: shaded bends and bridges can stay icy even on sunny days. Brake gently and early.
  • Daylight: winter days are short. Try to drive down before dark, especially if you're not used to mountain roads.
  • Fuel: fill up in the city before you go up. Queues on the mountain use more fuel than you expect.
  • Forecast: check the weather and road conditions the night before and again in the morning.

Leave early

On weekends, public holidays and around New Year, everyone heads up at the same time. Set off early in the morning to avoid queues and get a parking space near the lifts. The drive back on Sunday afternoon can also be slow, so plan some slack if you have a flight to catch.

For more on local rules, read our guide to driving in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Parking at the resorts

Both Jahorina and Bjelašnica have car parks near the main lifts, and many hotels and apartments have their own parking. On busy days the car parks closest to the slopes fill up quickly. Arrive early or be ready to walk a little further.

  • Some parking may be paid. Check the signs when you arrive and carry some cash in KM.
  • Park only in marked areas. Snow ploughs need room to work, and blocking them can get you towed.
  • If you're staying overnight, ask your accommodation where to park and whether you need a permit.
  • Clear snow off the whole car, including the roof, before driving off.

Which car to pick for a ski trip

Good winter tyres and careful driving matter more than four-wheel drive. Still, the right car makes the trip much easier.

  • Crossover or SUV (Seat Arona, Skoda Kamiq, Toyota Yaris Cross Hybrid, MG ZS, Seat Ateca): higher ground clearance helps on snowy roads and in deep car parks.
  • 7-seater (Seat Tarraco): ideal for groups or families who want to travel in one car.
  • Estate (Skoda Octavia SW): a long boot that fits skis and boots more easily, with the rear seats partly folded.

Many of our cars are automatic, which some drivers find easier on steep, snowy hills. See the full range on our cars page.

The Olympic story

Sarajevo hosted the 1984 Winter Olympics, the first Winter Games held in a socialist country. Jahorina hosted the women's alpine skiing events and Bjelašnica the men's. The ski jumps and cross-country trails were on Igman, and the bobsleigh track was on Trebević, the mountain right above the city.

Some of the Olympic venues were damaged in the war of the 1990s. The old ski jumps on Igman and the bobsleigh track on Trebević are now popular, slightly eerie places to visit and photograph.

Jahorina and Bjelašnica in summer

Don't think of these mountains only as winter destinations. From late spring to autumn they're cool, green and quiet, a welcome escape when the city is hot.

  • Hiking: both mountains have marked trails with big views. Stay on marked paths.
  • Lukomir: from Bjelašnica, you can continue to this traditional mountain village on the edge of a canyon. The last stretch is unpaved. See our day trips from Sarajevo by car guide.
  • Mountain food: try local cheese, lamb and pies in the mountain restaurants.

Check which lifts and restaurants are open outside the ski season before you go, as summer opening varies.

FAQ

Do I need a 4x4 to drive to Jahorina or Bjelašnica?

No. The main roads are ploughed in winter, and a normal car with winter tyres can get up in most conditions. Fit chains when signs require them. A crossover gives you extra ground clearance.

Are winter tyres included?

Winter tyres are required by law from 15 November to 15 April. At TRIO they cost €13 per rental. Add them when you book.

Can I drive straight from the airport to the slopes?

Yes. Our desk is in the airport terminal, open every day 08:00 to 21:00. Bjelašnica is roughly 30 to 40 minutes away and Jahorina about an hour. If your flight lands late, out-of-hours pick-up is available for €23.40.
